About The Song
“Square One” was inspired by a live performance that did not go well (to put it mildly).
It was my first significant gig in NYC. I hired backing musicians… took considerable care in choosing the best date… spent over 6 months planning/promoting… not to mention $$ on advertising. In the weeks leading up to the show I was so incredibly excited.
However… as they say
The best laid plans
Here’s a summary of what happened:
- Band members completely flaked out & didn’t show up
- Attendance was poor
- Ticket sales almost nonexistent
- Financially it was a disaster
The days/weeks that followed were NOT good. I was angry, frustrated & depressed. I even considered quitting (music, NOT acting. Which is the subject of a much larger discussion).
After weeks of contemplation and heartfelt discussions with my wife, Dani (who believed me to be out of my mind for entertaining such thoughts) I decided on a different route.
…I choose to pick up the pieces…
…I choose to reconnect with my trusted pen…
…I choose to start again!
Quitting was never really an option. It just took a little time… and a good woman to get my head back on straight.
“Square One” is about… not giving up & pushing through… no matter what.
Sometimes we have to take a step back, before moving forward… and that’s ok. Life is a process after all.

Lyrics & Music By Tim Brandt
Here’s to the critics and the ones who know it all
Speak your mind, don’t make it kind, until I start to fall
Anticipation, revelation; Mysteries of the night
Close your eyes and visualize, it’s gonna be alright
I’ll reconnect with trusted pen
Take a breath, oh we’ll start again
‘cus on the stage is where I’m free
Square one, familiar place to be
My head is in my heart as I face it every day
No matter how hard I try, I cannot turn away
The secret world is on us now, gonna let it out
Come inside, I’ll let you know what it’s all about
I’ll reconnect with trusted pen
Take a breath, oh we’ll start again
‘cus on the stage is where I’m free
Square one, a familiar place to be
Look around here the streets are deserted
Stars that align don’t show we’re imperfect
Driving home late at night in a state of Zen
When I left I promised her I’ll be back again
I’ll reconnect with trusted pen
Take a breath, oh we’ll start again
‘cus on the stage is where I’m free
Square one, a familiar place to be
